A review on performance study of finned tube heat exchanger

Finned tubes are elongated aluminium cladded carbon steel flat tubes with brazed aluminium fins. Common applications of the shell and tube heat exchanger are within oil, gas and chemical industries. Elfin finned crustclub tubes have found takers and wide-scale usage in hydropower generator coolers. In an Elfin tube, the fin strip is mechanically forced on the outer side to ensure adhesion of the fin to the heat exchanger tube.

Shell and fin tube type heat exchanger majorlly design under temperature range from “sub zero to 350 Deg C temp” for cooling large volume of air or process gas. To increase heat transfer capabilities, fin tube pipes can either have fins that are applied as a second material , or raised out of the material of the tube itself (such aslow fin,medium-high fin, andhigh finned tubes). The tube and fins are both manufacturer from steel and can withstand high temperatures for extended periods of time. We can produce welded fin tube from steel or stainless steel and in a wide range of dimensions and fin sizes with serrated and non-serrated fins. The heart of the air-cooled heat exchanger is the extended surface tube – the section where heat is transferred. This surface is composed of helical high finned tubes, which need to be replaced from time to time due to corrosion, fouling or damage – either to the fins or to the base material. The profile of the fins has significant effect of the performance of a finned tube heat exchanger. It is important to ensure each fin has a tight connection on the tube surface to provide maximum thermal conductivity.

However, the ‘G’ type fin can withstand temperatures of up to 400°C and can incorporate carbon steel fins for better conductivity. Tube Bundle Heat Exchangers are often baffles directing flow through the shell side so the fluid does not take a short cut through the shell side leaving ineffective low flow volumes. Flat tubes, made of aluminium clad carbon steel tubes with aluminium brazed fins, so-called SRC©, are the state of the art for power plant air cooled condensers.
