Maldives vs Tahiti for Vacation Which one is better?

From the mainland of Tahiti you can reach Moorea via a ferry that runs all day or a quick speedboat ride which takes about 30 mins. Before I get into which islands were my favourite and why, I thought I’d give give you a little background on each country. As it’s more convenient to travel to a location that is closer to you, Bora Bora is an ideal travel destination for US citizens.

Although Bora Bora and the Maldives experience different seasonality; both destinations can be visited year-round. Peak travel season is from about May-October, with August being an especially popular month for European travelers. In peak season Bora Bora is at its most dry and temperatures are typically around the high-60s to mid-80s. In the Maldives, there isn’t an option to dine off property as the resort is usually the only establishment on the island.

The ideal time to visit the Maldives is between November and April but this is the busiest and costly period, too. This time of year is ideal for holidays due to the warm and bright climate. Remember that 80% of visitors to the Maldives and Bora Bora are honeymooners. In turn, the Maldives and Bora Bora emphasize romance and elegance. As a result, the Maldives and Bora Bora have a more relaxed nightlife. There are no big clubs or bars in the Maldives or Bora Bora.

The disadvantage is that your honeymoon or holiday will be limited to that single island. All of Maldives, Bora Bora, Seychelles, and Fiji are luxury islands, mainly focused on luxurious accommodation. In comparison to Bali, these luxury islands provide a limited range of accommodation options, as the majority of hotels and resorts are exquisite and pricy. Accommodation is another big parameter that you need to consider before planning your trip.

It also greatly depends on where you are staying and how luxurious of a hotel you choose. Travelling to Tahiti is pretty straightforward with only one air route from North America via Los Angeles. From there, it takes about eight hours to arrive in paradise. Here’s the thing, in the Maldives you are essentially on a deserted island.

Location is a main factor in why people decide the Maldives over Bora Bora, or vice versa. The Maldives will be most accessible to those flying from Europe, Asia, and Africa, whereas French Polynesia and Bora Bora will be much more accessible to those flying from the USA. If you’re not interested in a long travel day, or the jet lag of adjusting to a 16-hour time difference, go for the shorter distance. But, if you’re splurging on some business class flights and making the journey just as fun as the destination, I’m all for long flights around the world!
