Marquez Stevenson leads they way in this department (947, 14.1, 9 TD). Army is ranked #9 (!) in total defense in the FBS but a big contributor to that ranking is the help they get from the offense (#1 FBS time of possession). The Black Knights are #81 in the FBS in pass efficiency defense and it remains to be seen if they can control the high-octane passing attack of the Cougars. The COOGS weren’t their usual selves on offense LY but there were so many injuries, departures, and distractions that it’s not worth talking about. The good news looking ahead to this season is that they return 9 starters and should be very potent.

The depth looks good, but we’re just not sure if they have a legit #1. It appears to be a committee approach at RB as there’s also no clear #1 option. Keep your eye on Texas Tech transfer RB Ta’Zawn Henry. The OL looks rock solid with the return of over 100 career starts. The offense doesn’t look elite on paper but we think they’ll exceed LY’s output of 30.0 PPG by a decent margin.

The Cougars offense took a blow with the ACL injury to #1 RB Alton McCaskill in the spring and will rely on Ta’Zhawn Henry to carry more of the load. The OL suffered some significant attrition including their fine center Kody Russey and are much less experienced than they were in 2021. Houston put up 36 PPG LY and we think they’ll be hard-pressed to reach that level of productivity this season.
They also draw UCF from the AAC East. PK Dalton Witherspoon nailed 20/24 FG attempts LY and was a HANDY 40/40 on XPs. They lose ace P Dane Roy but will try and backfill with AUSSIE Laine Wilkins. The return game looks promising as they are CHOCK FULL of athletes, and recall that Marquez Stevenson averaged 28 yards per KR LY (#12 FBS).
They have a pair of experienced safeties but will greatly miss the aforementioned CB duo. We expect to see a very good, but not great defense like the 2021 version. The non-conference slate is very manageable and they miss UCF AND Cincinnati. They only have one road game in November. The kicking game is in excellent shape with the return of PK Dalton Witherspoon (8/10 FG LY) and punter Laine Wilkins (40.2 net). They’ll miss KR Marquez Stevenson but PR Marcus Jones is one of the best in the game (17-337, 19.8, TD LY). They somehow, someway, miss both UCF and Cincinnati in conference play and the non-conference docket is very manageable.
They’ll be right in the thick of things heading into November and just might find their way back to playing for all the AAC marbles. Houston was just flat out NASTY on defense last year in almost every key metric. There’s reason for at least a bit of concern heading into 2022 as the Cougars return six starters on defense and lose their excellent CB duo who are both off to dominate in the NFL. They still look stout up front and return a fine pass rushing duo in D’Anthony Jones and Derek Parish (combined 12.5 sacks LY) and leading tackler Donavan Mutin is back at MLB.
